Why Is Petrol So Cheap in Kuwait?
Kuwait holds some of the largest proven oil reserves in the world, and its government keeps pump prices low through fuel subsidies. Prices are set by the state and announced by KNPC, not by the open market, so they barely move even when global crude prices swing.
Kuwait trimmed its subsidies in September 2016, when Premium 91 was set at 85 fils and Super 95 at 105 fils. Those two prices have stayed the same ever since. Only Ultra 98, the high-octane fuel used mainly by performance cars, is now adjusted regularly.
How Kuwait Sets Fuel Prices
Kuwait’s Cabinet reviews fuel prices every three months. A government subsidies committee decides the rates, and KNPC announces them shortly before each quarter starts on 1 January, 1 April, 1 July and 1 October.
- Premium 91, Super 95 and diesel have been held steady for years.
- Ultra 98 is the fuel that changes, moving up or down each quarter.
- Prices are the same at every station in the country, whether it is run by KNPC, Oula or Soor.
Next review: 1 October 2026. [Editor: update this page when KNPC announces October–December prices.]
