How US Gas Prices Are Set
The US has a free fuel market. The price at the pump is made up of four main parts: the cost of crude oil (the biggest share), refining, distribution and marketing, and taxes. Every gallon of gasoline carries a federal tax of 18.4 cents (24.4 cents for diesel), plus a state tax that differs from state to state. That is why prices vary so much across the country.

Diesel set a new national record of $6.53 a gallon on 22 September 2026. The previous record was $5.82 in June 2022.
Prices Differ a Lot by State
State taxes, environmental rules and distance from refineries mean the same gallon can cost very different amounts. In September 2026, California is the most expensive state at around $6.16 a gallon for regular, followed by Washington and Hawaii at about $5.55. The cheapest states, mostly in the South and Midwest, are just under $4.

Gas Price in USA vs Pakistan
Regular gasoline in the US costs about Rs 329 a litre, a little less than Pakistan’s price of around Rs 390. Diesel is the opposite: at about Rs 479 a litre, US diesel is now dearer than diesel in Pakistan. Of course, American wages are far higher, so fuel takes a much smaller share of a typical US household’s income.
