Quick answer: Petrol in India costs ₹102.12 per litre in Delhi (about Rs 297) and around ₹111 in Mumbai (about Rs 324). Diesel is ₹95.20 in Delhi. Prices are different in every state because each state sets its own tax.

💡 In Simple Words

  • Who sets the price? The state oil companies: Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum.
  • How often does it change? Prices can be revised every morning at 6 am. In practice they often stay the same for weeks.
  • Why is every city different? The central government charges the same excise duty everywhere, but each state adds its own VAT.
  • Cheapest and costliest metro: Delhi is the cheapest big city; Hyderabad is the most expensive.

How India Sets Fuel Prices

Since June 2017, India’s state-owned oil companies have been allowed to revise petrol and diesel prices daily, at 6 am. The price you pay is built from four parts: the cost of imported crude oil and refining, the central government’s excise duty, the dealer’s commission, and the state’s VAT.

Taxes make up a large share of the final price, which is why a litre can cost more than ₹13 more in Hyderabad than in Delhi. India imports most of its crude oil, so a weaker rupee against the US dollar also pushes prices up.

50 litres (sedan / SUV)₹5,106 · ≈ Rs 14,860₹5,561 · ≈ Rs 16,180

India vs Pakistan

Petrol in Delhi costs about Rs 297 a litre in Pakistani rupees, compared with around Rs 390 in Pakistan. That makes Indian petrol roughly a quarter cheaper. The gap is even bigger for diesel: about Rs 277 in Delhi against over Rs 400 in Pakistan.

Both countries import most of their crude oil, so the difference comes mainly from taxes, levies and exchange rates. See today’s petrol price in Pakistan or compare more countries on our international fuel prices page.
