High Octane fuel — officially known as High Octane Blending Component (HOBC) — is a premium-grade fuel with a higher octane rating than regular petrol.
Octane rating measures a fuel’s ability to resist “knocking” or premature detonation in an engine’s cylinders. The higher the octane number, the more compression the fuel can withstand before igniting.
Fuel Type | Octane Rating (RON) | Typical Price Level |
Regular Petrol (MS 92) | 90–92 RON | Standard |
Super / Premier Petrol | 93–95 RON | Moderate premium |
High Octane / HOBC | 95–97 RON | High premium |
Premium Performance Fuels | 97+ RON | Highest |
High-octane petrol is sold under different brand names across Pakistan:
OMC (Oil Marketing Company) | High Octane Brand Name | Notes |
PSO (Pakistan State Oil) | Altron X 97 | Nationwide availability |
Shell Pakistan | V-Power | Widely available in major cities |
Total Parco | Excellium | Available at select stations |
Attock Petroleum | Xtron Hi-Octane | Limited availability |
Saudi Aramco | Pro Force | New entrant with competitive pricing |
Some stations also offer Euro 5 compliant 97 RON fuel, which meets stricter emission standards.
Region | Availability Level | Best Brand Options |
Karachi | High | PSO, Shell, Total, Aramco, Attock |
Lahore | High | PSO, Shell, Total (especially DHA, Gulberg, Johar Town, Model Town) |
Islamabad/Rawalpindi | Moderate | PSO, Shell |
Faisalabad | Limited | PSO, Shell (limited stations) |
Multan | Limited | PSO |
Quetta | Very limited | PSO (limited stations) |
Gilgit/Northern Areas | Extremely limited | PSO (few stations) |
Tip for travelers: If you drive a high-octane dependent vehicle, plan your refueling stops in advance — especially when traveling outside major cities.
The high price of HOBC in Pakistan is driven by three main factors: government levy, deregulated market pricing, and import parity costs.
In late March 2026, the government increased the petroleum levy on high-octane fuel by a staggering Rs 200 per litre, raising the total levy from approximately Rs 100 to Rs 305.37 per litre. Additionally, a Climate Support Levy (CSL) of Rs 2.50 per litre applies to all petroleum products.
Petrol Levy Comparison (as of May 2026):
The government explicitly framed the levy hike as a measure to target luxury vehicle owners and protect lower- and middle-income groups from additional taxation. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also imposed an immediate ban on the use of high-octane fuel in government vehicles at public expense. This policy is expected to generate approximately Rs 9 billion per month in additional revenue.
OGRA does not set or regulate high-octane petrol prices. Unlike regular petrol (MS 92), which has a fortnightly government-notified price, HOBC rates are determined independently by each OMC based on market conditions, competition, and their cost structures.
This deregulation explains why:

This is the most important question for any driver considering premium fuel. Most cars in Pakistan do not need high-octane petrol.
The following types of vehicles have engines designed for high-octane fuel (minimum 95–97 RON) and may experience knocking, reduced power, or even engine damage if run on regular 92 RON:
Category | Examples |
Luxury German Sedans & SUVs | BMW (3 Series, 5 Series, X models), Mercedes-Benz (C-Class, E-Class, S-Class, GLE, GLS), Audi (A4, A6, Q5, Q7) |
Porsche Models | Macan, Cayenne, Panamera (turbo engines demanding high-octane fuel) |
High-performance Japanese/Luxury Brands | Lexus (IS, ES, RX, LX), Infiniti |
High-performance Sports Cars | Mustang, Camaro, etc. |
Forced Induction (Turbo/Supercharged) Engines | Many turbocharged engines require higher octane to prevent knocking, but not all — check your owner’s manual |
Several major automakers have issued official statements confirming that their vehicles run perfectly on regular 92 RON petrol:
Brand | Official Statement |
Kia Motors | All Kia vehicles in Pakistan are engineered to perform optimally on regular unleaded fuel with a minimum octane rating of RON 91 or higher. Kia confirmed that owners can continue using RON 92 fuel without compromising engine performance, reliability, or warranty coverage. |
GWM (Great Wall Motors) | “All GWM vehicles are optimized for RON 92 across trusted fuel stations nationwide,” the company stated, urging owners to stick with regular fuel. |
Honda Pakistan | Honda has assured that all their engines in Pakistan, including Turbo variants, are designed for standard unleaded petrol. Since regular petrol in Pakistan is 92 RON — already higher than the minimum requirement of 91 RON — owners are already giving their cars better fuel than needed. |
No. Popular motorcycles in Pakistan — including the Honda CD 70, CG 125, and Yamaha YBR 125 — are designed for low-octane fuel (typically 87–90 RON). Pakistan’s regular petrol (90–92 RON) far exceeds their requirements. Using high-octane fuel in these bikes provides zero performance or mileage benefit.
Match every sentence with realities and Check difference
Reality: This is one of the most common and costly myths. High-octane fuel does not increase fuel economy in engines designed for regular fuel. The octane rating measures knock resistance, not energy content. All gasoline contains roughly the same amount of energy per litre. Using premium fuel in an engine that doesn’t require it is simply wasting money.
Reality: While some premium fuels contain detergent additives that can help keep injectors clean, regular petrol in Pakistan also contains cleaning agents. For most drivers, periodic use of a quality fuel system cleaner (available at auto parts stores) is a far more cost-effective way to maintain engine cleanliness than constantly buying premium fuel.
Reality: Not necessarily. While many turbocharged engines are designed for higher octane, automakers like Kia, Honda, and GWM have officially confirmed that their turbo vehicles sold in Pakistan are calibrated to run safely and efficiently on 92 RON regular petrol. Always check your owner’s manual — it will state the minimum octane requirement.
Reality: Absolutely false. Pakistan’s 70cc–150cc motorcycles are designed for 87–90 RON fuel. Using 97 RON high-octane fuel provides no benefit whatsoever — you are simply paying more for the same ride.
The massive levy hike has dramatically increased the operating cost of luxury vehicles that require premium fuel.
A typical petrol SUV delivering around 10 km per litre costs roughly Rs 32 per kilometre to run on regular petrol. However, for luxury SUVs that require high-octane fuel, the running cost jumps significantly to around Rs 53–54 per kilometre.
Vehicle Type | Fuel Type | Fuel Economy | Fuel Price (Rs/L) | Cost per km (Rs) | Daily 50 km (Rs) | Monthly 1,500 km (Rs) |
Regular C-Segment SUV | Regular Petrol (92 RON) | 10 km/L | 399 | 39.9 | 1,995 | 59,850 |
Luxury SUV | High Octane (97 RON) | 8 km/L | 420 | 52.5 | 2,625 | 78,750 |
Luxury SUV (worst case) | High Octane (97 RON) | 7 km/L | 600 | 85.7 | 4,285 | 128,550 |
📌 Key Insight: A high-octane dependent luxury SUV can cost twice as much or more to run as a comparable regular-fuel SUV — even before considering higher maintenance costs, insurance, and depreciation.
The sharp increase in high-octane prices has accelerated interest in Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) and Range Extender Electric Vehicles (REEVs) among Pakistani consumers.
Feature | High Octane SUV | PHEV SUV |
Daily Running Cost | Rs 50–80 per km | Rs 7–10 per km (electric mode) |
Monthly Fuel Bill (1,500 km) | Rs 75,000–120,000 | Rs 10,500–15,000 (mostly electric) |
Long Trips | No range anxiety | Petrol backup available |
Home Charging | Not applicable | Requires dedicated parking |
Several manufacturers are offering PHEV models that allow drivers to complete most daily commutes (40–80 km) on electric power alone, with a petrol engine available for longer journeys:
For luxury SUV owners who want to escape high-octane costs without sacrificing performance or comfort, PHEVs represent a compelling alternative.
